EU Battery Regulation 2025 Officially in Effect – Businesses Must Act Now!

Starting August 18, 2025, the EU Battery and Waste Battery Regulation (EU 2023/1542) will become legally binding across the European Union. This regulation is part of the EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility) framework, requiring all companies that manufacture or sell batteries and battery-powered products to take responsibility for collection, recycling, and regular reporting.

Scope of Application

The regulation covers a wide range of batteries, including:

It applies in major EU markets such as Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Poland, the Netherlands, Ireland, and Belgium.

Who Must Register?

The EU defines “producer” very broadly. Businesses are required to register if they fall into any of these categories:

• • Selling cross-border into the EU through e-commerce platforms.
  • EU-based companies selling batteries or battery-containing products under their own brand.
  • Importing batteries into the EU for the first time.
  • Reselling products without clearly identifying the original producer.

Requirements from E-Commerce Platforms

Major platforms including Amazon, TEMU, AliExpress, TikTok Shop, and Alibaba have already announced:

• • Sellers must complete battery EPR registration
  • Upload their registration number to the platform before August 18, 2025
