What is BSCI? A Complete Guide to BSCI Audit

BSCI (Business Social Compliance Initiative) is a global social compliance system that evaluates working conditions in supply chains. This standard is widely adopted by international brands to ensure fairness, safety, and transparency in the workplace. To pass a BSCI audit, businesses must understand its core requirements and build an effective compliance management system.

Key Requirements of a BSCI Audit

The BSCI Code of Conduct is translated into 13 Performance Areas (PA), including:

    • Social management & human rights: policies, risk assessments, and training.
    • Workers’ rights & involvement: participation in management and transparent grievance mechanisms.
    • Non-discrimination & protection of dignity.
    • Fair wages & working hours: ensuring minimum wages, moving towards living wages, and voluntary overtime.
    • Occupational health & safety, and environmental protection.
    • Ethical business conduct: transparency, anti-corruption, and anti-bribery practices.

BSCI Grading System

Companies are scored from A to E:

    • A – Very Good (86–100%): minimal need for re-audit.
    • B – Good (71–85%): continuous improvement required.
    • C – Acceptable (51–70%): improvement plan within 60 days.
    • D – Insufficient (30–50%) & E – Unacceptable (0–29%): mandatory corrective actions and re-audit.

Who Needs BSCI?

BSCI applies to all organizations regardless of size, industry, or country—especially those in the global supply chain, such as:

    • Manufacturers, suppliers, exporters.
    • International brands and retailers.

Key Benefits of BSCI Compliance

Adopting and passing a BSCI audit brings multiple advantages:

    • Higher productivity & employee retention: better working conditions enhance workforce loyalty and efficiency.
    • Improved competitiveness & market access: a “passport” to cooperate with major international partners, especially in the European market.
    • Stronger brand reputation & trust: proven commitment to social responsibility builds credibility with customers and investors.
    • Reduced risks: prevents violations of labor laws, disputes, or community boycotts.
    • Cost savings: minimizes multiple separate audits from different buyers.
